theWander turns your everyday walking into something you can feel. Your raw walking data — every step, every day — stays on your device. Your account stores only a small journey summary (total distance, streak, badges) so your progress is safe across devices and the leaderboard works. We don't sell your data, and we never use it for advertising.
With your explicit permission, theWander reads the following from Apple Health (iOS) or Health Connect (Android):
You grant this permission through the operating system's own Health screen, and you can revoke it at any time in your device settings. Your journey starts counting from the day you join. This health data is processed and stored on your device only — it is never uploaded. theWander does not read or track your location; your route, your GPS position and your movements stay unknown to us.
theWander asks you to sign in with Apple or Google. Sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication (a Google LLC service acting as our processor). From your provider we receive your name, your email address (Apple lets you hide it behind a private relay address) and a unique account ID. We use your name only in a shortened public form — first name plus last initial, e.g. "Sanad S." — and there is no free-text name field anywhere in the app. Your email address is never shown to other users.
Your account's cloud profile contains only derived summary numbers, stored in Google Cloud Firestore on servers in the European Union:
Never raw step samples, daily histories, workouts, routes, locations or anything else from your health store. Other wanderers can see your shortened display name, country and journey distance on the leaderboard — that's the entire public surface.
If you allow notifications, theWander sends you local notifications (for example, when you cross a new milestone). These are generated on your device; they are not sent through a remote push service that would receive your data.
The in-app "Delete my data" option erases your walking history and settings from your device, and deleting the app does the same. To close your account entirely — deleting your cloud profile, leaderboard entry and friendships — use Profile → Close account in the app. You can also email hello@thewander.app and we'll remove it for you.
theWander is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
If we change how theWander handles data, we'll update this page and revise the date above. Meaningful changes will be surfaced in the app.
